Colts add new twist to United Way giving
If you missed the United Way of Central Indiana kickoff on Monument Circle on Friday, you might not have heard the big news announcement from the Colts. Day Nursery was on hand at Friday’s event along with many other Indianapolis area not for profits to reach out to the community to meet new supporters and volunteers and share what services we have to offer. Day Nursery staffers know there is a great need for assistance in our community judging by the calls we get for our tuition assistance program. Another indication of local human need is growth in calls to Connect2Help’s 2-1-1 telephone information and referral line. During the first eight months of the year, those calls have risen 13 percent compared to last year with the top five reported needs being utility assistance, food, rent, shelter and low-cost/subsidized housing. So you can see the need is great. This year’s United Way of Central Indiana annual campaign is aimed at broadening community support for sustaining vital human services and programs to help children succeed in school and beyond. Anyone who gives a new gift of $100 to United Way of Central Indiana, or increases last year’s gift by $100 will be eligible for a grand prize trip for two to the Super Bowl in Dallas or a chance to meet Peyton Manning and other prizes. Also, those who give by text message can win Colts tickets, apparel and memorabilia. Just text COLTS to 864833 to give $10. “United Way gifts support the whole community – today and tomorrow,” noted Don Knebel, chairman of the annual campaign and a partner at Barnes and Thornburg. “Today, by helping neighbors in need with food, shelter, job training and much more. And tomorrow by giving kids and families the building blocks for a better life through education programs. So we invite everyone to give at whatever amount they can.” Details are available at www.uwci.org.
