Feel Good Friday: Indianapolis Firefighters Visit Day Nursery
Firefighters from Indianapolis Fire Department Station 31 at 42nd and College Avenue made an educational visit to the Day Nursery Ruth A. Lilly Center not far away at 35th and Central this morning. The visit concluded a week-long study of community helpers including fire safety with practice fire drills and 9-1-1 calls. The study of fire fighters was worked into as many aspects of the curriculum as possible.
Books about community helpers were featured classroom libraries and art activities featured the color red and large cut out firetrucks. In the housekeeping area of the two-year old room, children practiced serving meals to firefighters.
On the playground the children pretended their tricycles were firetrucks and practiced how to Stop, Drop and Roll. Promptly at 10:30 this morning, Engine 31 with firefighters Quinn, Pete and Kelly led by Lt. Harry Alexander arrived in the parking lot of the center. Because the firefighters were on duty, there was a chance they would be called away at any minute so they wasted no time in making sure every child got to climb through the cab of the engine and explore the equipment.
Luckily the fire radios stayed quiet and they got to stay and enjoy a delicious chicken and noodles lunch prepared by Miss Anita. Apparently Station 31 already has a firefighter who is a very good cook but they did stop by the kitchen on the way out to see if perhaps Ms. Anita could fill in when he was not on duty. We are so thankful for the wonderful visit of these friendly, kind and brave fire firefighters and they are welcome to stop by anytime they are in our part of the neighborhood.
